Il live report di “I Am The Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell”, il concerto tributo dedicato alla memoria di Chris Cornell.
Il 16 gennaio si è tenuto al Forum di Los Angeles un concerto tributo a Chris Cornell – “I Am The Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell” – al quale hanno preso parte membri di Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, Audioslave e tanti artisti, amici e colleghi del compianto cantante.

L’evento è stato presentato da Jimmy Kimmel e ha visto diversi musicisti e colleghi di Chris Cornell tributare il compianto cantante di Seattle. I Melvins hanno dato il via al concerto con un set di cover di Soundgarden, Green River e Malfunkshun. Durante la serata, la Gibson ha presentato una chitarra dedicata al cantante di Seattle – la Chris Cornell Tribute ES-335 – mentre Brad Pitt, Josh Brolin, Stone Gossard (“Questo tributo è un momento di guarigione per tutti” ha detto, clicca qui per leggere il discorso integrale del chitarrista dei Pearl Jam) e i figli di Cornell hanno ricordato il cantante.
Dopo tre canzoni tratte dal repertorio solista di Cornell ed eseguite da Rita Wilson, Alain Johannes (con Nikka Costa) e Chris Stapleton, è seguito il set dei Foo Fighters nel quale è stata proposta No Attention, tratta da Down on the Upside, e alcune cover di Devo e Cheech & Chong già presenti nel repertorio dei Soundgarden. Dave Grohl ha terminato il set con un’emozionante versione di Everlong solo voce e chitarra, dedicandola a Chris Cornell.
Il tributo è continuato con Rusty Cage suonata da Josh Homme dei Queens of the Stone Age, Seasons eseguita da Adam Levine dei Maroon 5 e Stone Gossard dei Pearl Jam e As Hope and Promise Fade cantata da Miley Cyrus.

La seconda parte del concerto è iniziata con la reunion degli Audioslave con Tom Morello e Brad Wilk. Il set ha previsto cinque canzoni della band suonate insieme a Perry Farrell, Geezer Butler dei Black Sabbath, Juliette Lewis, Tim McIlrath dei Rise Against, Brandi Carlile e Dave Grohl (che ha cantato Show Me How To Live).

Ziggy Marley, il figlio di Bob, ha suonato insieme a Toni Cornell, la figlia di Cornell, una cover di Redemption Song cui è seguito il set dei Metallica – con reprise di All Your Lies e Head Injury – che sono stati presentati da Jack Black. Ryan Adams ha quindi riletto Dead Wishes, tratta da Higher Truth, e Fell On Black Days in chiave acustica.
La terza parte del tributo ha visto riunirsi un combo di musicisti che hanno collaborato con Chris Cornell nel corso degli anni composto da Nikka Costa, Alain Johannes, Brandan O’Brien, Josh Taylor, Stone Gossard e Josh Freese. La band ha suonato Preaching the End of the World e Can’t Change Me tratte dal disco di debutto del cantante, Euphoria Morning, pubblicato esattamente vent’anni fa. Sono poi saliti sul palco Jeff Ament con Jerry Cantrell e William DuVall degli Alice In Chains che, inseme a Stone Gossard e Josh Freese, hanno riletto Hunted Down dei Soundgarden.

La reunion dei Temple of the Dog è stato uno dei momenti più alti della serata. Prima è stata suonata All Night Thing – con Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Brendan O’Brien, David Garza, Matt Chamberlain e Fiona Apple alla voce – poi Say Hello 2 Heaven, con Miley Cyrus alla voce. Il set è terminato con Hunger Strike che ha visto duettare Brandi Carlile, cantautrice di Seattle, insieme a Chris Stapleton.

I Soundgarden hanno chiuso il concerto con una performance di otto canzoni. Rusty Cage e Drawing Flies sono state cantate da Taylor Momsen dei Pretty Reckless – gli opening act del tour 2017 della band di Seattle – mentre Flower e Outshined (con Stone Gossard alla chitarra) sono state cantate da Marcus Durant degli MC50.

Loud Love ha visto Taylor Momsen alla voce, Tom Morello e Wayne Kramer (MC5) alle chitarre. I Awake e The Day I Tried To Live sono state eseguite con Taylor Hawkins dei Foo Fighters e Buzz Osborne dei Melvins, Black Hole Sun ha visto Peter Frampton alla chitarra e Brandi Carlile alla voce. Il tributo si è concluso con una lunga jam strumentale suonata da Ben Shepherd insieme a Kim Thayil, senz’altro il momento più alto dell’intera serata. Perché, nonostante tutti gli artisti coinvolti, “no one sings like you anymore”.
