The (Lost and) Found Performance of Tom Waits with Eddie Vedder

After 27 years since the historic Not in Our Name: Dead Man Walking – The Concert, the video of Tom Waits’ set featuring Eddie Vedder, Ani DiFranco, and many others is now available on YouTube.

Following the 1995 theatrical release of Dead Man Walking and its accompanying soundtrack, a benefit concert was organized in Los Angeles in 1998 to raise awareness against the death penalty.

Part of the video from that concert was included in the Legacy Edition of the soundtrack, released in 2006, featuring (as a bonus) a new studio version of Dead Man recorded by Eddie Vedder, along with all the songs originally included in the 1995 soundtrack. Among these were Vedder’s collaborations with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (The Face of Love and a reworked version of Long Road, retitled The Long Road).

While concert footage featuring Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Lyle Lovett, Ani DiFranco, and Steve Earle was included in the Legacy Edition of Dead Man Walking (Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture), Tom Waits’ set – originally listed in the release’s tracklist – was unfortunately left out.

Now, after 27 years, that video is available for the first time on YouTube thanks to the official Tom Waits channel and OdditiesandRarities – a fan channel dedicated to the legendary singer from Pomona.

The video, just under ten minutes long, features three of the nine songs Waits performed that night: Gun Street Girl, Goin’ Out West, and Innocent When You Dream – the concert’s closing song, performed with The Doors’ John Densmore on tambourine and Eddie Vedder, Ani DiFranco, Steve Earle, and actor/filmmaker Tim Robbins on backing vocals.

This release is a significant moment, especially for fans of Tom Waits and Eddie Vedder, as this video represents the only known collaboration between the two American songwriters.
