Josh Klinghoffer and that tragic crash in L.A.: the Pearl Jam touring member takes a plea deal and avoids jail time.

Josh Klinghoffer, best known for his time as the guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers from 2007 to 2019 and currently a touring musician with Pearl Jam since 2021, recently made headlines again—not for his music, but for a tragic accident in Los Angeles that happened in March 2024. The crash resulted in the death of 47-year-old Israel Sanchez, a pedestrian from Alhambra.
The Crash
On March 18, 2024, Klinghoffer was behind the wheel of a black GMC Yukon SUV when he struck Sanchez, who was crossing the street at a clearly marked crosswalk in broad daylight. Surveillance footage and official reports say Sanchez was walking normally and clearly visible when Klinghoffer’s vehicle made a left turn and hit him head-on—without any apparent attempt to brake.
Sanchez was thrown to the pavement and suffered severe head injuries. He was rushed to the hospital but died a few hours later. Klinghoffer immediately pulled over, called 911, and fully cooperated with police at the scene. Officers found no signs of alcohol or drugs in his system, and no reckless driving behavior was noted.
However, Sanchez’s family later claimed Klinghoffer was looking at his phone at the moment of the crash. A security video appears to support this, showing him glancing downward just seconds before the impact.
The Court Case and Plea Deal
Sanchez’s daughter, Ashley, filed a civil lawsuit and demanded justice for her father’s death. After over a year of investigations and hearings, Klinghoffer officially entered a plea deal on May 28, 2025, at the Alhambra courthouse.
He pled guilty to the misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter. The plea allowed him to avoid prison time, but came with the following conditions:
- 60 days of community service
- One year of informal probation
- Mandatory attendance at a traffic safety course
- Financial restitution to the Sanchez family
During the hearing, Ashley Sanchez gave an emotional statement, describing her father as a loving man, a hard worker, and a devoted grandfather. She called his death “completely avoidable” and urged people to take distracted driving more seriously.
A Career Full of Big Names
Klinghoffer has worked with some of the biggest names in modern rock. He joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2007 after John Frusciante left the band. He played on two studio albums before being let go in 2019—when Frusciante decided to return for yet another comeback.
Since then, Klinghoffer has stayed active in the music world as a touring and session musician. He’s been part of Pearl Jam’s live lineup since 2021, playing guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals. He’s also in Eddie Vedder’s solo band, the Earthlings, and played on Earthling, Vedder’s third solo album released in 2022.
Beyond that, Klinghoffer has worked live and in the studio with artists like Jane’s Addiction, Iggy Pop, Morrissey, Elton John, and many more. He also fronts his own solo project called Pluralone, putting out records that dive into more experimental and personal sounds.
What’s Next
The L.A. crash changed the lives of everyone involved—especially the Sanchez family, but also Klinghoffer himself. Since then, he’s kept a low profile, staying out of the public eye and avoiding interviews. He has, however, continued touring with Pearl Jam and playing with other side projects.
What lies ahead is still unclear. Alongside the criminal sentence, a civil lawsuit for damages is still ongoing, with the next hearing set for July 1, 2025. A painful story, no doubt—one that reminds us how quickly everything can change, even for someone used to being in the spotlight.
