Ottobre 2007: Voci insistenti, non confermate e non ufficiali, riportano che i Pearl Jam torneranno in studio nella primavera del 2008 per iniziare a lavorare al nuovo album. 3 Febbraio 2008: Jeff Ament è apparso ad una partita dei Sonics, la squadra di basket di Seattle. Intervistato dallo speaker Kevin Calabro, Ament ha svelato che i Pearl Jam ritorneranno in studio nelle prossime settimane per iniziare a scrivere materiale che andrà a comporre il nono album in studio della band di Seattle. 15 Febbario 2008: Billboard ha confermato che prima del tour solista di Vedder che si terrà nell'Aprile del 2008, i Pearl Jam si riuniranno in studio per iniziare a lavorare al nuovo album. 11 Marzo 2008: Rolling Stone riporta che Ed Vedder ha passato l'inverno a fare surf ad Oahu (Hawaii), scrivendo materiale e rilassandosi con sua moglie e la figlia di tre anni. “E' un buon posto per stare, in questo mondo incasinato,” ha commentato Vedder. “L'acqua è il posto dal quale traggo la mia maggiore ispirazione, e da dove ha origine il processo di scrittura.” 21 Marzo 2008: Billboard ha confermato che un paio di settimane fa la band si è ritrovata per otto giorni per iniziare a riunire le idee per il nuovo album in studio della band, anche se Ament ha precisato, "Questo non significa che il prossimo mese ci sarà un disco, ma che è l'inizio del processo. A volte ci vogliono sei mesi, a volte due anni." Ha aggiunto, "E' divertente suonare. Siamo diventati bravi a jammare insieme, quindi è divertente ritrovarci e accendere gli amplificatori. Matt (Cameron) ci dà una battuta e cerchiamo di far saltar fuori qualcosa. Stanno uscendo alcune cose nuove, diverse." Anche Stone Gossard ha commentato: "Siamo solo agli inizi, è così eccitante. Non abbiamo idea di dove andremo a finire ma abbiamo tanti grandi, piccoli inizi." 27 Marzo 2008: Secondo alcuni rumors, Brendan O'Brien potrebbe produrre il prossimo disco dei Pearl Jam. Sul sito della band The Living End, si legge: "I Living End mixeranno l'album con il leggendario produttore Brendan O'Brien, che si occuperà del mixaggio tra i suoi impegni nelle registrazioni del nuovo disco degli AC/DC e del nuovo disco dei Pearl Jam" 25 Aprile 2008: Ospite della radio 107.7 The End di Seattle per parlare del CCFA Benefit, Mike McCready ha confermato che la band è al lavoro sul nuovo album. Non ha fornito ulteriori informazioni, ma ha confermato che stanno lavorando con il loro vecchio produttore (Brendan O'Brien). 30 Aprile 2008: Mike McCready è stato ospite della radio 104.9 FunkyMonkey e ha ulteriormente confermato Brendan O'Brien (verso la fine di questa intervista). 17 Maggio 2008: Mike ha descritto il nuovo materiale su cui la band sta lavorando come "in parte 'poppy', in parte un po' più 'hard'. Vogliamo farlo crescere un po'. Dobbiamo rivisitarlo alcune volte." Per quanto riguarda la possibilità di ascoltare nuove canzoni durante i prossimi shows di Giugno: "Non credo che siano già abbastanza rifinite da volerle suonarle davanti ad un pubblico. Non vogliamo scazzare di fronte a tutti." Agosto 2008: In un'intervista col magazine spagnolo Staf Magazine, realizzata prima del tour estivo dei PJ, Jeff Ament ha detto che la band tornerà in studio in autunno o inverno. 3 Settembre 2008: Jeff Ament, intervistato da Billboard, ha confermato che i Pearl Jam torneranno in studio in autunno e che sperano di fare uscire il nuovo disco questo inverno. La band di Seattle al momento ha quasi finito le parti strumentali di 5-6 pezzi e 15 altri abbozzi dai quali sperano di ricavare altri 3 o 4 pezzi. Inoltre ha detto che la band ha intenzione di tenere alcuni shows negli stati del Sud degli USA nel corso del prossimo anno. 4 Ottobre 2008: Jeff Ament: "Torneremo insieme in studio in Ottobre per una manciata di sessions. Abbiamo circa 5 o 6 solide basi strumentali e Stone Gossard ha portato alcuni grandi riffs. Potrebbe diventare qualcosa di veramente incredibile". Quando pensate di farlo uscire? "Speriamo d'iniziare a registrare il disco per l'inizio dell'anno". (Rolling Stone U.S.A.) 19 Novembre 2008: Jeff Ament, il bassista dei Pearl Jam, è apparso il 19 Novembre alla radio 101.1 KUFO-FM di Portland durante il programma di Cort and Fatboy per un'intervista (mp3). Ament ha confermato che i Pearl Jam inizieranno con molta probabilità ad incidere il nuovo album nella primavera del 2009 e che uscirà indicativamente durante l'estate o l'autunno del prossimo anno. 3 Dicembre 2008: Il 3 Dicembre scorso Jeff Ament ha partecipato ad una chat sul sito di ESPN, il celebre canale televisivo dedicato al mondo sportivo americano. Nel corso della chat i fans hanno posto diverse domande al bassista dei Pearl Jam; tra queste, un jammer ha chiesto "Quando ci possiamo aspettare il nuovo album?" e Jeff ha risposto: "Ci stiamo lavorando, è come un sufflè. Ci vuole un pò di tempo". 9 Dicembre 2008: McCready è apparso al Tractorn Tavern di Seattle il 9 Dicembre per un set con i suoi Shadow '86. Dopo la conclusiva 'Yellow Ledbetter', Mike ha parlato del nuovo album: "La band sta registrando e scrivendo pezzi. Abbiamo 9 pezzi, per ora. Ed sta lavorando a qualcosa di veramente punk in questi giorni." 30 Gennaio 2009: McCready è apparso ad una radio di Seattle, la FM Kiro, e ha confermato che i Pearl Jam stanno lavorando a 18/19 canzoni. Probabilmente il nuovo disco della band di Seattle, a detta del chitarrista dei Pearl Jam, uscirà verso la fine dell'estate del 2009.
27 Marzo 2009: Mike McCready è apparso al programma radiofonico Ron & Don Show della radio di Seattle KIRO 97.3 (mp3) confermando che la band è a metà del nuovo disco, che hanno registrato 14 canzoni e che con molta probabilità il disco uscirà entro la fine dell'anno. Il chitarrista ha anche confermato che i Pearl Jam terranno un piccolo tour americano in Settembre. 23 Aprile 2009: Jeff Ament è intervenuto alla radio The Trail 103.3 di Missoula (Montana) lo scorso 17 Aprile e ha rivelato che la band saprà la data di uscita del nuovo album entro il 1 Maggio, confermando che si trovano a metà delle registrazioni. Oggi Stone Gossard è stato intervistato dal canale tv MSNBC e alla fine dell'intervista ha detto che l'album uscirà a Settembre (video). La band si trova al momento ad Atlanta, dove sta lavorando al nuovo album con il produttore Brendan O'Brien, originario proprio di Atlanta.
18 Maggio 2009: Il sito ufficiale ha annunciato che il 1 Giugno i Pearl Jam saranno ospiti del "Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" sul canale NBC, dove proporranno brani dal loro prossimo album in studio. 30 Maggio 2009: Secondo alcune indiscrezioni circolate in rete, i Pearl Jam sono apparsi a sorpresa il 28 Maggio 2009 allo Showbox di Seattle per registrare il video del primo singolo estratto dal loro imminente nuovo album. La performance è stata filmata da una vecchia conoscenza della band, il regista Cameron Crowe. Il pezzo, del quale non si conosce ancora il titolo, è stato provato una decina di volta davanti ad un pubblico di circa 300 comparse. La serata è terminata sulle note di "Sonic Reducer" dei Dead Boys e di un' improvvisazione lenta.
- Pare ormai certo che il titolo del nono disco in studio dei Pearl Jam sarà "Backspacer". Il titolo è stato confermato anche dal conduttore televisivo Conan O'Brien in occasione dell'esibizione dei Pearl Jam al 'Tonight Show' (tutte le info qui). Presentando la performance, il conduttore ha anche mostrato quello che è sembrato un CD con tanto di artwork (foto), ma non si tratta però della copertina finale dell'album; l'immagine infatti è solo uno degli elementi dell'artwork ancora in lavorazione e curato da Tom Tomorrow, l'amico fumettista di Vedder, per cui il cantate dei Pearl Jam aveva scritto una lettera di sostegno alcuni mesi fa (fonte: Tom Tomorrow's blog), - Il primo singolo tratto dal nuovo album uscirà probabilmente in Luglio, mentre il disco arriverà nei negozi, presumibilmente, il 22 Settembre 2009 negli Stati Uniti (quindi il 18/09 in Europa), - Il pezzo provato allo Showbox il 28 Maggio si chiama "The Fixer" e potrebbe essere il primo singolo estratto dal nuovo disco. Kelly ha anche confermato che una parte dei tre/quattro brani filmati per l'occasione potrebbe entrare a far parte del documentario che Cameron Crowe sta preparando per il ventennale della band e che potrebbero anche essere destinate ai bonus delle versioni online o delle edizioni europee del nuovo disco. La decisione di tenere lo show a sorpresa allo Showbox è stata presa perchè, contrariamente a quanto avevamo riportato un paio di giorni fa, la band non ha girato un video musicale, ma uno spot televisivo per Target, una grande catena americana di supermercati, - Negli Stati Uniti, infatti, il nuovo disco non uscirà tramite una casa discografica ma grazie ad accordi con un consorzio di partners tra i quali grandi corporations come la sopracitata Target, retailers online, partners del mondo delle telefonia e dei videogames, oltre ai circuiti dei negozi di musica indipendenti. Nel resto del mondo il nuovo disco verrà invece distribuito dalla Universal e, ovviamente, sarà disponibile anche tramite il Ten Club, il fan club ufficiale della band. 21 Giugno 2009: Il magazine musicale tedesco Visions (Luglio 2009 - scans dell'articolo, grazie a skyvalley@PJ message board) ha pubblicato una tracklist (ancora non confermata dal Ten Club) di "Backspacer", il nuovo album dei Pearl Jam che uscirà il 18 Settembre 2009. 10 Luglio 2009: Il sito AllAccess.com, che si occupa di industria musicale, da qualche giorno ha messo in rotazione nella sezione "Rock" alcuni banners pubblicitari animati che annunciano per il 20 Luglio l'uscita in formato digitale di "The Fixer" che - a questo punto possiamo dirlo, - è ufficialmente il primo singolo dei Pearl Jam estratto dal nuovo album "Backspacer", la cui data di uscita (ufficiale e ora confermata anche dal Ten Club) è fissata per il 20 Settembre negli USA - quindi il 18 Settembre in Italia (Grazie a TFT).

Pochi giorni fa, Billboard ha pubblicato un bell' articolo sui Pearl Jam, di cui consigliamo vivamente la lettura (la traduzione italiana è disponibile qui) e da cui si è appreso che l'edizione di "Backspacer" in vendita negli USA nei grandi magazzini Target darà accesso ad una pagina online con 11 concerti che coprono tutto l'arco della carriera della band, tra i quali l'aquirente potrà sceglierne due da scaricare. La band creerà anche una T-shirt in cotone organico che sarà venduta nei negozi Target e i cui proventi andranno in beneficenza a Feeding America. Target ha anche l'esclusiva per una versione dell'album che permetterà di accedere al download delle canzoni di "Backspacer" per il videogame "Rock Band 2" su Xbox Live e Playstation Network. La partnership con il provider di telefonia mobile USA Verizon, inaugurata in occasione del tour 2008 e proseguita anche in occasione della riedizione di "Ten", è stata riconfermata anche per il lancio di "Backspacer": già a partire da questa settimana e fino al 17 Settembre, gli utenti Verzion possono scaricare le canzoni del nuovo album come suonerie e risponderie accedendo al sito www.vzw.com/mp3. Oct 2007: Insisting, unconfirmed and unofficial rumors report that Pearl Jam will be back in studio in spring 2008 to work on a new album. Feb 03/2008: Jeff Ament appeared at a Seattle Sonics basketball game. Interviewed by announcer Kevin Calabro, Ament revealed that Pearl Jam are "gonna get together here in a couple of weeks and try and write some stuff" for the Seattle band's ninth studio album. Feb 15/2008: Billboard has confirmed that before Vedder hits the road with his US solo tour in April, Pearl Jam is expected to regroup and start sketching out material for its next studio album. Mar 11/2008: Rolling Stone reports that Ed Vedder has spent the winter surfing in Oahu, writing and hanging with his wife and three-year-old daughter. “It's a good place to be in a screwed-up world,” Vedder said. “The water is where I get most of my thinking done, and the writing just starts happening.” Mar 21/2008: Billboard has confirmed that a couple weeks ago, band members got together for eight days to begin kicking around ideas for the next Pearl Jam album, although Ament cautions, "It doesn't mean there'll be a record our next month, but it's the start of the process. Sometimes it takes six months and sometimes it takes two years." He also added, "It's just fun to play. We've actually gotten really good at jamming with each other, so it's fun to get together and crank up the amps. We'll have (drummer) Matt (Cameron) throw a beat at us and try to come up with something. There's some new, different kind of things coming out of people." Stone Gossard also commented: "We're just getting into it, which is so exciting. We have no idea where it's going but we have a lot of great little starts." Mar 27/2008: Rumours are spread Brendan O'Brien might be the producer of Pearl Jam's next album. According to The Living End's website: "The Living End will then be stepping in to mix the record with legendary producer Brendan O'Brien, who will be mixing the album in between his commitments recording the new AC/DC album and the new Pearl Jam record." Apr 25/2008: Mike was on 107.7 The End radio to talk about the CCFA concert and mentioned that they were currently working on the new album. He didn't give up any more info except that they were working with their old producer (Brendan O'Brien - confirming it, actually). Apr 30/2008: Mike McCready was on 104.9 FunkyMonkey and further confirmed Brendan O'Brien (right at the end of this interview - about 60 min in). He also said the band is working on '5 ideas' so far.
May 17/2008: About the new material the band has been working on: "Some of it's kind of poppy and some of it's a little hard. We want it to grow up a little bit. We have to revisit it a few times." As for the possibility of previewing new and unrecorded material at their next shows, McCready said that's unlikely to happen on Pearl Jam's upcoming North American tour: "I don't know if we have it refined enough to want to play it in front of an audience yet. We don't want to hack in front of everybody." August 2008: In an interview Jeff Ament gave on Staf Magazine before PJ's summer tour, he said that the band will be back in studio in autumn/winter. September 3/2008: Ament, interviewed by Billboard, has also confirmed that, later this fall, Pearl Jam will reconvene to continue work on its eighth studio album. "Hopefully sometime this winter we will knock a record out and," he says. "We have five or six almost finished instrumental beds, and maybe 15 other things from which we could definitely get three or four songs out of". He also hinted that the band could play some shows in Southern USA next year. October 4/2008: Ament: "We're gonna get together in October and have a handful of sessions. We have about five or six solid instrumental arrangements, and Stone Gossard has come up with some great riffs. I think it could turn into something pretty amazing." Whats the ETA? November 19/2008: Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament made an interview with radio 101.1 KUFO-FM in Portland during the Cort and Fatboy show (mp3) on November 19. Ament confirmed that Pearl Jam will probably begin to record the new album in spring 2009 and hope to release it next summer/fall, approximately. December 3/2008: On December 3, Jeff Ament took part in a live online chat on ESPN.com, website of the famous U.S. TV channel devoted to sports. During this chat, fans asked him some questions; one of them was: "When can we expect the new album?" and Jeff answered: "We're working on it... this one's souffle-like so it might take a while". December 9/2008: McCready appeared at the Tractorn Tavern in Seattle on December 9, for a set with his Shadow '86. - They plan to release their ninth studio album on their own, without a label. "We'll make deals with a number of partners - retail, online and probably mobile, too" says Pearl Jam manager Kelly Curtis, adding that the group will sell digital and physical versions of the album on its own website. "The cool thing is, as the record companies are kind of dying, the opportunities are growing"
March 24/2009: In a recent interview with ShockHound Magazine, Jeff Ament revealed that one of the songs that the band has been working on lately is titled "The Fixer". March 27/2009: Mike McCready appeared at the Ron & Don Show on Seattle's KIRO 97.3fm radio (mp3) for a phone interview, confirming that that the band is halfway through recording their new album (they recorded 14 songs so far) and it is very likely that the album will come out later this year. The guitarist also confirmed that Pearl Jam will be doing a small U.S. tour in September. April 23/2009: Jeff Ament spoke on Radio 103.3 The Trail of Missoula (Montana) on April 17 and revealed that the band will know by May 1st the album release date, confirminig that it is "halfway done" . Today Stone Gossard was interviewed by TV channel MSNBC and at the end of the interview said that the new album will be out in September (video). The band is currently in Atlanta, working on the new album with Atlanta producer Brendan O'Brien.
May 18/2009: The band's official site has announced that Pearl Jam is scheduled to appear as the inaugural musical guest for the June 1, 2009 premiere of “The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien.” The band will perform songs from their upcoming studio album. May 30/2009: According to some rumors circulating on the Web, Pearl Jam played a surprise gig at the Showbox in Seattle on May 28 to shoot a video for the first single from their upcoming new album. The performance was filmed by an old acquaintance of the band, director Cameron Crowe. The song (whose title is still unknown) has been tried a dozen time in front of an audience of about 300 extras, hired to be in the crowd for the taping, a large number of whom were reportedly laid-off workers from the area. The performance ended with a cover of Dead Boys' "Sonic Reducer" and an unnamed (likely new) slow jam.
- It now seems certain that Pearl Jam's ninth studio album is titled "Backspacer". The title has also been confirmed by TV host Conan O'Brien, introducing Pearl Jam's performance at the 'Tonight Show' (full details here). Presenting the band, Conan held up what it seemed to be a CD with artwork (photo), but the image was only part of a greater whole — it wasn’t the finished album cover, wich is still in production and is being created by Tom Tomorrow, cartoonist and Vedder's friend (source: Tom Tomorrow's blog). - An official first single will likely be released in July, while the CD will presumably be in stores on September 22, 2009 in the U.S. (September 18, 2009 in Europe), - Possible first single "The Fixer" was filmed at the Showbox on May 28. Curtis said that the band shot three or four songs that night and confirmed that some of the footage may be used for a project that Cameron Crowe is working on in connection to the band's 20th anniversary and may also appear on additional materials for online or European release. Contrary to what we reported two days ago, the band wasn't shooting a music video last week at Seattle's Showbox, they were actually recording a commercial for Target (which is US's third-largest discount retailer) under the direction of Cameron Crowe, - Curtis confirmed that the band's next release would come without a U.S. label, but a consortium of partners, including Target as the "big box" retail partner. "We'll have a lot of partners," said Curtis, who confirmed that deals were also finished or in the works with an online retailer, a mobile partner, a gaming company and with a network or possibly networks of indie retail stores. Internationally, the album will be released via Universal Music Group and, obviously, it will also be for sale via Pearl Jam's fan club, Ten Club. June 21/2009: German music magazine Visions (July 2009 issue - scans here, thanks to skyvalley@PJ message board) published a tracklist of "Backspacer", the new Pearl Jam album due out on September 18, 2009. July 10/2009: Music industry website AllAccess.com has recently been displaying on its "Rock" news section a couple of animated advertising banners announcing for July 20 a digital release of "The Fixer" that - at this point we can say it, - is officially the first single from the new Pearl Jam album, "Backspacer" whose release date (now officially confirmed by Ten Club) is scheduled for September 20, 2009 in the U.S. Internationally, the album will be available beginning on September 21, 2009 via Universal/Island Records. A few days ago, Billboard published a must read article about Pearl Jam, revealing that those who purchase the album through Target will be able to access a "virtual 'vault'" of 11 concerts spanning Pearl Jam's career, from which fans can choose two. The band will also create an organic cotton T-shirt to be sold at Target, with proceeds earmarked for the hunger relief charity Feeding America. "Backspacer" will also be available on "Rock Band" the day it comes out, and Target has an exclusive on an edition of the album featuring access to download its songs for "Rock Band" on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. The partnership with US mobile operator Verizon, started during the 2008 tour and continued with the reissue of "Ten", has been re-extended to include ringtones and ringbacks for songs from "Backspacer," which will roll out at a rate of one per week until release date, as well as mobile bootlegs for the band's fall tour. Between now and the album's release on Sept. 20, the company will be offering one exclusive ringtone a week (and three the final week before release).
